UKBJJA International Open 2018

Information for competitors

Dear competitor,

First of all allow us to thank you for taking part in this the first United Kingdom Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Association International Open. We would like to draw to your attention some key details:

Opening Ceremony:

The day will start at 9:15 with an official opening ceremony, led by UKBJJA Chairman Mr Richard Martin, UKBJJA Area Officer for Scotland and member of the board of Directors Mr James McIntyre, The Provost of North Lanarkshire Council Mrs Jean Jones and the MSP for the area Ms Clare Adamson. All participants are invited to attend.

Schedule & Brackets:

The tournament schedule and brackets can be found at: –
https://ukbjja.smoothcomp.com/en/event/899/schedule

Please arrive no later than one hour before the projected start time of your division. There is a significant amount of redundant time built into the schedule so it is possible that divisions later in the day may start earlier than initially shown here. It is important that you regularly check Smoothcomp for updates on your division start time and you should not move away from the bull pen/warm-up area once you are inside. Anyone who is absent from this area at the start of their match will be disqualified.

Weigh-ins & Gis:

Weigh-ins will take place immediately prior to your first match in the division. There are no allowances given and you will only have one opportunity to weigh-in. Gis will also be checked at this time. Gis must adhere strictly to IBJJF rules, including for colour (white, blue and black only). If your gi fails, you will be given time to change it. If you are unable to do so within the allotted time you will be DQ’d. In addition, footwear must be worn at all times when not on the competition mat or weigh-in scale. Anyone found in contravention of this rule will be automatically DQ’d.

Medals:

Medals will be issued at the conclusion of the division. Runners will take the finalists plus the losing semi-finalists to the medal holding area where these will be issued. It is double bronze for each division of 4 or more.
Absolute Divisions:
Absolute divisions are for medalists only. Those divisions where the numbers mean medallists are guaranteed have already had the competitors placed in the divisions provisionally. If you are in one of these categories and you don’t wish to be, email us and we will remove you. The remaining categories will be sorted on the day.

Prizes:

Absolute cash prizes & division ‘bounty’ cash prizes: these will be paid by electronic bank transfer or by PayPal. Winners will need to ensure that they provide relevant details to event staff before leaving the venue.

White Belt Absolutes & Junior/Juvenile ‘Best Athlete’: TATAMI fightwear are kindly providing prizes of equipment to the winners of White Belt Absolutes and Junior/Juvenile ‘Best Athlete’. These prizes will be sent to the winners after the event. If you are a winner, please ensure you provide your email address, postal address and clothing size to event staff before leaving the venue.

T-shirts: all competitors will receive a free T-shirt. We have a range of sizes available, but cannot guarantee your size will be available – they will go on a first come first served basis. Spectators & coaches are welcome to purchase T-shirts, subject to availability, for £10 – half of this money will be donated to Cash4Kids Mission Christmas.

More information about the prizes can be found HERE.

Coach passes and parent/guardian passes:

Coach passes are available free one per team. Each child competitor under the age of 16 is also eligible to have one free adult accompanying them. In both circumstances an email must be sent to ceo@ukbjja.org giving details of the coaches name and the team they are representing or the name of the accompanying adult and the child they are accompanying. Otherwise a spectators’ ticket will be charged.

Spectators:

Spectators tickets are charged at £5, payable on the door. All proceeds are being donated to Cash4Kids Mission Christmas – so please invite as many friends, family and team-mates as possible! Click on image to find out more about the charity and its work.

Respect Rule

This event has a zero tolerance policy regarding inappropriate behavior by coaches, parents/guardians, spectators and competitors.

All in attendance must show some restraint when their students or team mates are fighting. There will be competitors and spectators of all ages at this event and we are here to set an example.

Any swearing, inappropriate gestures, violence (towards person or property) or berating the officials (regardless of any decisions they make) will not be tolerated. If this happens, the referee/organiser has the right to disqualify that competitor, or to ask the person concerned to leave the area. If those concerned do not comply with the referee/organisers request the competitor will be disqualified from the event.

If a coach, parent or team mate encroaches onto the mat, or past any barriers that are in place, or man handles an official in any way, that person will be asked to leave the venue and the whole team may not be permitted to take any further part in the competition.
